Common Snipe
A squat, cryptically-plumaged shorebird with a very long bill. It inhabits a wide range of wetland habitats, from damp meadows to salt marshes. Mostly inconspicuous, it feeds in muddy ground by probing with its bill, usually near reeds or other grassy cover. Often not seen until flushed, when it usually rises from fairly close range with a rough rasping call. In Asia, beware of the extremely similar Pin-tailed, Swinhoe's, and Latham's Snipes, all of which lack the white trailing edge of Common and have a slower, less erratic flight.

White-cheeked Barbet/ Small Green Barbet
The White-cheeked Barbet (Psilopogon viridis) is a green barbet found only in southern India. Note the dark brown head & the characteristic white patch around the ear-coverts, a white line above the eye, and a white throat. Also note the brown neck and breast with white streaks. This barbet is heard more often than seen with constant calls of “kutrook-kutrook-kutrook” in mid-day hours from all kinds of wooded patches.

Panchgani - Holy Grail Timelapse
Spectacular locations often make for some spectacular photographic opportunities. The stunning hill station of Panchgani is one such location which offers a huge array of opportunities. On this trip I spent time doing day to night timelapses - the Holy Grail. A Holy Grail timelapse is a one where you go from day to night or from night to day. It gets the “Holy Grail” epithet because of just how insanely difficult it is to make given how the ambient light changes SO DRAMATICALLY from the beginning up until the end of the shoot. Luckily for us today, camera technology has caught up and it’s made shooting and editing a holy grail timelapse almost as simple as any ordinary timelapse.

Bansilalpet Stepwell
The Bansilalpet Stepwell (Naganah Kunta) is a six-level baoli or stepwell in close proximity to the centuries old Hussain Sagar Lake. Much of its history has disappeared with the passage of time but its architectural features stylistically date it to over 300 years old. The Pharaoh & Co. mentions the well as Naganah Kunta in their 1954 map of Secunderabad as part of a garden of tamarind and palmyra trees during the British period. Later, in the 1930’s, a Britisher - T.H. Keyes - developed the area and the project was funded by local businessman Seth Bansilal, after whom the stepwell came to be known.
This is the first chapter in finding the Stepwells of the Deccan series in collaboration with the Rainwater Project.

Ferruginous Babbler
The Old World Babblers are a family of passerine birds diverse in size and coloration, characterised by soft fluffy plumage. These are birds of tropical areas, with the greatest variety in Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. This group is among those Old World bird families with the highest number of species still being discovered.
The ferruginous babbler is a species of bird in the family Pellorneidae. It is found in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. It is a reddish-brown babbler with white underparts. It forages in small flocks in the lower and middle levels of lowland and lower foothill forests.

Lights of the Night Sky
I am sure all of us have been in situations where we have gone out at night to a reasonably remote location and saw an incredibly beautiful night sky with millions of stars shining back at us, or even the beautiful arc of the Milky Way. It is possible to capture the Milky Way through light pollution by using a technique call Exposure To The Right, or ETTR. Read more…

Pied Kingfisher
#Kingfishers are a family of small to medium-sized, brightly coloured birds in the order #Coraciiformes. They have a cosmopolitan distribution, with most species found in the tropical regions of Africa, Asia, and Oceania. The family contains 114 species and is divided into three subfamilies and 19 genera. I have been able to photograph a few of these across Asia Pacific with some coming quite easily and some coming after waiting for hours, damp and cold but worth every bit the wait. Featured here is the boldly marked Pied Kingfisher.
