The Rufous-gorgeted is a bold little flycatcher of mid- to high-altitude forests with a flashing black-and-white tail. Male is brown above with a black face, white eyebrow, and orange throat patch (gorget). The female is essentially a faded version of the male with a dark gray face and a pale, largely unnoticeable gorget. Usually perches at middle levels, sallying from its perch to catch flying insects. Often joins mixed-species feeding flocks.

A graceful & glamorous flycatcher, the adult male sports a long ribbonlike tail. The males occur in two color morphs cinnamon and white. Both color morphs sport a glossy black head with a blue ring around the eye. The white morph is entirely white below while the cinnamon morph has cinnamon upperparts & tail, and dirty white underparts. The females are cinnamon above with a grayish throat, a shorter tail, and they lack the male’s blue eyering. They make short aerial sallies after insects, usually returning to the same perch and occasionally descending to ground to pull apart insects. These are chiefly found in wooded habitats.

The Blue-eared Kingfisher is a diminutive dark blue kingfisher with no rufous on the ear-patch. It has an orange spot in front of the eye, white ear tufts on the sides of the neck, and an ultramarine-blue head and neck with darker blue bands giving it a scaly appearance. The upper parts are a glossy dark blue with paler blue central band down the back to the rump. A white chin and throat with deep orange underparts. The males have black bill with brownish-red base, while the females have almost entirely red bill. The juveniles also have dark blue upper parts, but rufous cheeks and ear-coverts similar to the Common Kingfisher. They inhabit well-shaded waterways in forested areas.

The brightly coloured adult male is unmistakable in range, a blazing sapphire blue with orange flanks and white throat and belly. The female is brown with a white throat, orange flanks, and pale blue rump and tail. The Himalayan Bluetail has a bright blue eyebrow and brighter, deeper blue upper parts in the male. Their song is a simple, repeated “tcher-thcew-wee!”. They breed in submontane forest up to the treeline descending in the winter, often moving into edge habitats.

The ultramarine or white-browed blue flycatcher is a small arboreal Old World flycatcher in the ficedula family that breeds in the foothills of the Himalayas & winters in southern India. The incandescently beautiful male is resplendent in electric blue and snowy white. The female is a dull gray-brown with paler underparts. It breeds in hill and montane broadleaf & pine forests descending into the lower foothills in winter.

It was a pleasant morning with a nice breeze & beautiful diffused light. We were photographing the Ultramarine Flycatcher when I noticed a small warbler foraging in a mimosa tree in the background. I took a few photos and was pleasantly surprised to see that it was a Tickell’s/Alpine Leaf Warbler, a very rare bird in Thailand! The pale blue flycatcher (Cyornis unicolor) is a species of bird in the family Muscicapidae. Superficially similar in appearance to the Verditer flycatcher, it is a paler blue, with greyish underparts from throat to vent, and a discontinuous black eye-patch. Both birds can often be found in the same locale. It is found in the subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest & subtropical or tropical moist montane forests of Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The Olive-backed is a small pipit with a greenish-brown back and heavily streaked breast & belly that is often seen in loose flocks or in pairs. Note the distinctive facial pattern: broad pale lines surrounding the eye and a dark ear patch. It prefers more forested areas than other pipits, though will also forage in fields and scrubby edges.
