Rufous-gorgeted Flycatcher

The Rufous-gorgeted is a bold little flycatcher of mid- to high-altitude forests with a flashing black-and-white tail. Male is brown above with a black face, white eyebrow, and orange throat patch (gorget). The female is essentially a faded version of the male with a dark gray face and a pale, largely unnoticeable gorget. Usually perches at middle levels, sallying from its perch to catch flying insects. Often joins mixed-species feeding flocks.

Indian Paradise Flycatcher

A graceful & glamorous flycatcher, the adult male sports a long ribbonlike tail. The males occur in two color morphs cinnamon and white. Both color morphs sport a glossy black head with a blue ring around the eye. The white morph is entirely white below while the cinnamon morph has cinnamon upperparts & tail, and dirty white underparts. The females are cinnamon above with a grayish throat, a shorter tail, and they lack the male’s blue eyering. They make short aerial sallies after insects, usually returning to the same perch and occasionally descending to ground to pull apart insects. These are chiefly found in wooded habitats.

Rusty-cheeked Scimitar Babbler

The Old World Babblers are a family of passerine birds diverse in size and coloration, characterised by soft fluffy plumage. These are birds of tropical areas, with the greatest variety in Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. This group is among those Old World bird families with the highest number of species still being discovered. Featured here is the Rusty-cheeked Scimitar Babbler from Doi Luang in Chiang Mai.

A large brown babbler of scrubby edges, second growth, and open forest in hilly and montane regions. Seen in groups of up to a dozen during the non-breeding season, but pairs off in the spring and summer. Gray-brown from the crown down to the tail, ochre-colored on the face and flanks, and white on the throat, breast, and belly. Lacks any strong streaking or spotting. Like other scimitar-babblers, frequently duets, giving clear, gulping phrases, often with a liquid quality. Also gives harsh, aggressive chattering typical of the genus.

Green-tailed Sunbird

An endemic race of the Green-tailed Sunbird completely confined to the summit of Doi Inthanon.

The Green-tailed Sunbird’s species name is technically accurate, but the male’s bright greenish-blue head is much more noticeable than his tail. Also note his red upper back and bright yellow underparts. The female is olive-yellow with paler underparts and a greyish head. Note the lack of a strongly contrasting pale rump patch as compared to female Mrs. Gould’s Sunbird. The Green-tailed inhabits montane and hill forests and forest edge.

Hawfinch

The Hawfinch is a unique, chunky finch sporting a massive bill (steely gray in summer, pinkish in winter), blue-gray hindneck, like a shawl on an orangey head. Despite its distinctive appearance, it is shy and easily overlooked. It favours mixed & deciduous mature woodland, especially with beech, oak, & hornbeam, where it tends to feed and perch quietly, high in the canopy. It also feeds on the ground in autumn and winter, sometimes forming single-species flocks.
